... Gia went from being a sweet, innocent young girl to an out of control disassociated young adult. Carangi had spiked up hair, tattoos and was irresponsible. In the film, Carangi’s father left her in charge of their family owned restaurant and she left when there were many customers. It was on that particular day that she befriended TJ (Eric Michael Cole). TJ would later play a major role in her life, and would be there for her until the very end. In the film, TJ was romantically interested in Gia. Even though he realized that the feelings are not mutual he still cared for her and acted as her protector. He attempted to be with her sexually but she would never respond. In the film, there are scenes showing Carangi sexually teasing TJ and he told her, “Don’t do something you know you’re not going to.” At one point in the film, TJ asked Carangi, “Have you ever been with a man before?” She responded, “yes, but I could’ve done that with a German shepherd.” Although the movie never directly said that Carangi was a lesbian, it showed that she was attracted to females. Carangi had herself professionally photographed, then sent her pictures to a famous modeling agency in New York City. Afterwards, Carangi was employed by Wilhemina Cooper (Faye Dunaway), and commenced her career as a model. During Carangi’s rise into the modeling scene, she developed a close personal relationship with Cooper. Cooper made her feel special, powerful, and most of all loved. Once she became aware of her new found fame, she contacted her mother. Carangi had no type of communication with Kathleen Carangi after she left her when she was a child. After that, it was as if nothing had ever happened. Carangi’s abandonment by her mother was never discussed between them in the film. At the beginning of her modeling career she met her one true love, Linda (Elizabeth Mitchell), a makeup artist. Linda and Carangi had a chaotic relationship filled with passion, confusion and heartache. From the very beginning Linda loved Carangi. Linda said that Carangi was like a puppy, always wanting to be loved, and that she did love her right away. In the film, Linda was in a state of confusion. During her relationship with Gia, she was also in a relationship with a man. Linda was also living with him at the time. Linda chose Carangi and ended her relationship with this man. Unfortunately, Carangi chose otherwise. Carangi chose drugs when Linda asked her to stop for her and for Carangi’s own sake. In the film, Linda attempted to help Carangi by enrolling her in a drug program. When Carangi is released, she telephoned Linda, and the man she was previously living with, answered. Carangi was so devastated and enraged, she used drugs again, and did not stop after that. Even though Carangi was successful, she had a drug addiction that grew stronger with time. She used cocaine occasionally with friends and at parties. But, when Cooper died, her addiction reached a higher level of intensity. It was at this point that she would be addicted to stronger narcotics. Carangi’s career began to deteriorate due to her drug addiction, and so did her relationships with those closest to her. Both TJ and Linda made valid attempts to help Carangi overcome her addiction. They never gave up on her, but it was as if s...
