The farmers weren’t the smartest people; they often got very little to no education. Yet, they were also the smartest people, for their common sense. The Scarecrow always seemed to be losing his stuffing and always had to keep putting it back in himself. The farmers kept losing their crops due to the dust storms. Another character is the Tinman; who wanted a heart. He can be related to the fact that industry was often seen as being heartless. Before the Depression, industry was booming and the stock market kept going up. But there also were sweatshops and child labor, and no laws to stop that. A bunch of industries had problems because they relied on solely one product that people couldn’t afford or couldn’t keep buying. This was like the Tinman always needing oil, and not being able to go on without it. In the end he discovered that he already had a heart and just needed to know how to use it. Industry did the same thing, eventually. Other symbolic characters included the Wicked Witch of the West, which represented President Hoover because he was from California (which is in the west).
