Chief Bromden and McMurphy became very good friends and started to help each other in irritating the Big Nurse. Chief Bromden was also a shadow to McMurphy and followed him wherever he went. One night, McMurphy and the patients went a little too far. They managed to sneak in two women, wine and marijuana. After their little party, they were too drunk to clean the place up so the Big Nurse discovered McMurphy and the patients with the two women. The Big Nurse was in shock! She also found empty wine bottles scattered on the floor. Soon after, the Big Nurse could not put up with McMurphy any longer. After being attacked and strangled by him, she felt he was too violent and caused him to have a simple operation, which resulted him in becoming a vegetable. Chief Bromden was very sad and couldn’t stand watching his friend sitting in a wheelchair as a vegetable. He was angry that the Big Nurse use McMurphy as an example of what happens if anyone bucked the ward system. Later that night, when McMurphy was sleeping, Chief Bromden suffocated him with a pillow. He knew that’s what McMurphy would have wanted so the Big Nurse would not be able to use him as an example for her patients. After putting McMurphy away, Chief Bromden escaped the ward the way McMurphy taught him. Character Sketches Chief Bromden is a very large, muscular, and tall man who thinks he is small and weak. He stands at six feet seven inches and is half Indian. Chief Bromden lives his life in the ward quietly and fearful against the Big Nurse until McMurphy comes along. He was so quiet that everyone in the ward thought he was deaf all the time he was living there. Chief Bromden was a caring guy because at the end, he thought about McMurphy. He knew that McMurphy wanted to win against the Big Nurse, so Chief Bromden suffocated him and he couldn’t be used as an example. Yet, Chief Bromden was kind of cruel for suffocating McMurphy. How could he have done that to his own friend? It’s hard to imagine to end a friend’s life, even if he was a vegetable. Randle P. McMurphy is an inspiration to everyone in the ward. He gives all the patients the courage to stand up for themselves and live their lives freely against the Big Nurse. McMurphy has a big, muscular physique like a weight lifter with red hair who is a very rude person. He is an ace con man, but at the same time, is also honest with his friends at the ward. McMurphy usually got what he wanted even though the Big Nurse did not approve of it. He cleverly planned risky schemes, like the time he sneaked in the women, wine, and marijuana into the ward after convincing the security guard into helping him and his friends with their plan. McMurphy was a very brave man because it took guts and courage to do what he did. He went against everything the Big Nurse said and stood up against her. Even though the Big Nurse caused him to have a lobotomy which turned him into a vegetable, he proved that he was a brave leader. Nurse Ratched, also known as the “Big Nurse”, was a large lady.
