OUTLINE
Title: Backyard Wildlife Habitat
Central idea: We are in the midst of an environmental crisis, one in
which we created ourselves. As caretakers of this land, we
need to act now and restore our depleting ecosystems by
providing for the local wildlife, a habitat in our backyards.
Introduction: Let us explore the process of creating an environment
for wildlife in the midst of our depleting of natural
resources. ... The changes in our land usage is effecting the wildlife. ... One of the many solutions is to provide a wildlife habitat
in our backyard. ... The National Wildlife Federation has a great
plan to assist you in creating a wildlife habitat. ... As more and more people transition into the outskirts of the cities, we need to develop a plan to assist landowners in maintaining the balance between humans and wildlife.
“Loss of habitat is the major reason wildlife is disappearing
all over the country. Habitat restoration is critical for wildlife in urban and suburban settings where commercial and residential development has eliminated most natural areas. The National Wildlife Federation’s (NWF) Backyard Wildlife Habitat program teaches people how to save a place for wildlife right in their own backyards while giving them a way to connect with the natural world. “ 1
A big reason for this loss of habitat is due to a
change in the American landscape. ... ” 2 With this transition occurring, we (as landowners) need to act now to preserve our wildlife. Because as more and more land is being utilized as places of residence, the ecosystems are being changed causing wildlife to disappear and some even to extinction. ... We need to get involved and challenge our leaders to adhere to these goals, and educate the population on maintaining our natural resources and wildlife.
One way in which everyone can get involved is by participating in starting a backyard wildlife habitat. ... In this process, the habitat elements are identified. ... Since native plants are the backbone of every habitat by providing food and cover, a plant list needs to be created. ... Water is very important for wildlife. ... Structures that provide habitat elements need to be included on this list. ...
The second step of creating a backyard habitat is to provide all species with the four basic elements for survival.
