The Darker brother does what he is told, but does it with a laughfing kind of a smile: “But I laugh, And eat well, And grow strong.” This quote symbolizes the pride that he has for being an American. The Whites did not want the blacks to gain knowledge, that’s why they did not want to associate with them, especially when company comes. When company comes they tend to talk a lot on all kinds of stuff that’s why they would send a black person somewhere else so the black person could not have a understanding of what they are talking about. In this situation he still eats well and grows strong meaning that he still is feeding in knowledge and grows strong because of that. He could not do anything about his situation now, but he had confidence in that things will change in time. The Darker brother shows his confidence by saying “Tomorrow, I'll be at the table When company comes Nobody'll dare Say to me Eat in the kitchen.” He knows when things change and African Americans can eat at the table with white folks there will be no reason for him to leave the table. The Darker brother then says “They'll see how beautiful I am And be ashamed” meaning they will see how special he is and be ashamed to tell him to leave and go in the kitchen. But in the mean time he keeps his pride and confidence becoming stronger and smarter. The Darker brother resembled the confidence of the black. They believe that they were also Americans. They spoke the same language and had any other attributes other that they were black. So they knew that one day they would...
