Let them Move On
... do not have the choice to skip a grade “stay in school but tune out (Time, 2004). These gifted children are performing almost as well on standardized test as their older class mates (Time, 2004). Some people think that skipping a grade is about showing off, when it really is not. These kids are quickly overpowering schoolwork and they should have the chance to move on up if they wanted to. No one has a problem when it comes to sports and kids like Leborn James who dominates his age group in athletics. It is obvious that he was the best of the best; Leborn James gifted abilities to play basketball gave him the opportunity and option to stay with his age group or excel to the NBA where it was more challenging and competitive. No one is holding back the gifted athlete’s to play at their own ability, so why are the gifted scholars being hold back on their ability to learn? Schools that are not allowing gifted kids to accelerate in school could be leaving them in an uncomfortable classroom environment. Leaving a gifted child in a classroom with kids that are not so gifted can cause a lot of problems. It could get to the point where the kid is answering all the questions in class, getting everything right on homework and test; that other kids are becoming jealous and envy of them. This situation would not be good in any case because kids now and days are temped to do anything their friends influence them to do. This can lead to violence just because some schools think that if they remove gifted children out of the classroom it would upset the slower kids (Time, 2004). Gifted students should be able to feel comfortable at school. They should not have to worry about being the only one participating in class or the teacher telling them to “give the other students a chance to answer”. Gifted students should feel confident and proud when they come to school, not sad and depress because they are not enhancing in their education. Out of the time magazine it was said that “if the work is not challenging for these highly-ability kids they will start to feel invisible”.
