When the King steps forward to defend his court, Gawain stands up and requests that he be allowed to take the challenge himself. Despite the serious implications he will one day face, Gawain decapitates the Green Knight. This shows extreme bravery, Gawain holds true to the code of knighthood and defends his king and his kingdom. The other virtue is loyalty. He holds true to this virtue, by holding true to his pact.
