This period of salutary neglect was pretty much taken for granted until the French and Indian War ended in 1763. With the victory of England, they begin to defeat the colonists. The British victory was costly; the huge war debt was created and the responsibility to pay it was extended to the colonists. The Parliament and the chancellor of exchequer decided that the colonists should pay for the enormous war debt; as a result, the British closely oversaw the colonies.
