Finally Germany signed a treaty with their highest enemies with which the two agreed not to attack each other and to split Poland in half (but the last part was kept secret). Another part of the wars which can be compared is the sides involved. In both wars two groups of countries fought against each other. In World War I, the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Turkey) battled against the Allies (France, United Kingdom, Russia, United States). In World War II the Axis Powers (Germany, Russia, Italy, Japan) fought against the Allies (United Kingdom, France, United States). An additional topic for comparison would be the weapons used in both wars. In World War I, the majority of the war was fought from the trenches, making it long and drawn out. Alternatively, in World War II, both sides relied heavily on air warfare. This is when dogfights and air bombing became known to war. In World War I, many of the weapons used were poisonous gases, mines (land and sea), bullet proof tanks, U-boats, machine guns, hand grenades, rifles fighter planes and zeppelins. On the other hand, in World War II, the weapons which were used were much more technologically advanced. In this war the aircraft and tanks are what were drastically improved. More importantly, in the later years of the war two totally new weapons were brought to the scene. These were the long range missiles and the deadly atomic bomb. Finally, one major area for comparison are the global effects of the two wars. In World War I there were fewer people killed altogether. It demolished fewer buildings, and it left millions with nowhere to go instead of tens of millions. In more ways in one it left deeper scars that may never heal, on the minds of the people and on the geography of Europe. In World War I there were fewer civilians killed than in the Second World War.
