My interpretation of the second Noble Truth is that we do not suffer because we desire things, but we suffer because we desire the wrong things. It should be acceptable to desire enlightenment or Nirvana. The third Noble Truth states that desire can be extinguished and thus putting and end to the difficulties and suffering of life. To extinguish desire, one must be able to detach oneself from their desires. Finally, the fourth Noble Truth, suggests that the way to rid desire and suffering is to follow the “Eightfold Path” , a training in wisdom, ethics and meditation. According to Buddhism, the only way to reach Nirvana or enlightenment, is to follow the “Eightfold Path”. The eight aspects of the path are not to be understood as a sequence of single steps, instead they are interdependent principles that have to be seen in relationship with each other. The “right view” is considered to be the beginning and end of the path. It means to see and understand things as they are and to realize the Noble Truths. This means a lifelong process of studying and learning. Having this understanding is a great advance, but it is just not enough, I feel that you must apply it to every path. Secondly, “right intention” , which can be best described as commitment to ethical and mental self-improvement. It also means to have a clear devotion to the path of enlightenment. During the path of “right intention” your mind is freed from greed/desire, anger and ignorance. Next, is the “right speech” path, which involves both clarity of what is said, taking care to say just what is meant and speaking kindly without malice. I would consider the “right speech” path to be the first ethical principle in the Eightfold Path. The second ethical principle, “Right Action” involves the reflecting on ones behavior and determining the reasons for it.
