...it you? This is the main question that a utilitarian would ask himself. This is morally a very good concept. If you always to do the the best for yourself and others, this world would be a better place to live. It's not always that easy however. Say for example, that during a close baseball game, the coach tells the next batter to bunt. The sole purpose of his request is to move the runner who is currently on first base to second base, so he will be in a better position to score on the following play. The batter that is going to bunt, will be thrown out at first. He knows this, as does the coach and team mates, but he is willing to take the out to benefit the whole team. He may have wanted to hit the winning home run of the game, but he chose to sacrifice himself to benefit the majority. The batter will receive happiness from knowing that he was willing to take the out, so that his team would win. They win the game and every...
