The Rivals shows through brilliant spectacle how the costumes of the characters assist the idea of pretending and lying. A main character of the production by the name of Captain Jack Absolute is one of the first ones to help display this. As the son of Sir Anthony, Jack Absolute is a very wealthy captain in the army with a lot of prestige. This gets in the way with his intention to woo a woman by the name of Lydia, for she thinks it would be romantic to fall in love with someone from a lower class. Because of this, he pretends to be someone else with half of the money that he really has. It is with the costume design on Captain Jack Absolute that allows the artifice to really show.In the beginning of the production, Absolute is nicely dressed with a gold shimmery robe, looking very wealthy and extremely handsome. Later on, in his new false identity of Ensign Beverly, his costumes consist of a blue coat army jacket and a little less extravagant.
