A Doll's House

...act borrowed money from an associate without Torvald’s knowledge and he becomes very angry because of it. Proof/Quotation: “Just listen, little Nora talking about scientific investigations!” Analysis of Proof: This quote dictated by Torvald shows that men in the 1800s thought women of being rather silly and unintelligent because it was the man’s job to have the education and provide for the family with his job that the education was used for. Optional Proof/Quotation: “You have no idea what a true man’s heart is like, Nora. There is something so indescribably sweet and satisfying to a man in the knowledge that he has forgiven his wife – forgiven her freely …he has given her new life.” Analysis of Proof: This quote illustrates that Torvald nearly compares himself as a God like figure to Nora because he portrays giving her new life and forgiving her for her sins. This relates to my theses in the fact that it shows socials beliefs and Torvalds values of a woman’s role in life compared to that of a mans. The contrast is very evident within the following quote and the particular monologue that the quote is from, spoken by Torvald in the 3 act, is one of the most important turning points in the entire play. Concluding sentence/transition: Overall women in Ibsen’s time were not seen as equality to men and Ibsen shows the reality of this situation through Torvald’s truth’s and belief’s throughout the entire play. BODY PARAGRAPH 2 Topic sentence (argument 2): The relationship that Torvald and Nora have is very similar to that of a father daughter relationship. As my thesis shows, in Ibsen’s time a stable relationship where both parties were equally happy could not be established because the women were almost always treated like children. Proof/Quotation: "Is that my little lark twittering out there...Is it my little squirrel bustling about...you extravagant little person..." Analysis of Proof: This shows that Helmer uses little pet names for his wife as a father would use to talk to his daughter. Proof/ Quotation: “I want to go upstairs I don’t want to leave so early...Torvald dear pleas only an hour more…Not a single minute my sweet Nora. You know that was our agreement. Come along into the room: you are catching a cold standing there…I had to bring her away by force Mrs. Linde.” Analysis of Proof: This quote indicates that Torvald had to drag Nora away from her own party as soon as she finished dancing the Tarantella. Although Nora is a fully grown woman and should be able to make her own decision whether she wants to stay at the party or not, Torvald treats her like a child and forbids her to stay any longer. When considering the aspects of a father-daughter relationship compared to a husband-wife relationship (as presented in my thesis) it seems quite odd to see that a curfew would be given to the female party in both examples. A sequence of many situations such as these led eventually up to Nora’s departure from her husband permanently. This quote also shows that Torvald is worried and concerned about his wife however it is more of a parental type of worry that is not needed to such extremities. Optional Proof/Quotation: “Hasn’t Miss Sweet-Tooth been breaking rules in town to-day?...Hasn’t she paid a visit to the confectioners? … Not been nibbling any sweets?” Analysis of Proof: This quote is a main example of Torvald treating his wife like a child because the universal scolding for children is for eating too much candy, or eating candy when their not supposed to. The fact that Torvald is enforcing the “no candy” rule on his wife is a little disturbing in the matter that they are husband and wife and not father and daughter. Concluding sentence/transition: In conclusion, our society today does not involve husband/wife relationships and father/daughter relationships as having many similarities to each other. Ibsen’s goal was to basically show the reality of the “behind the scenes” of real relationships at his time and many of the situations in the play showed that the role of the female in a relationship was made to be very similar to the helplessness of a young daughter BODY PARAGRAPH 3 Topic sentence (argument 3): My following argument can tie very well in...
