What affects the size of a crater

Aim

The aim of this experiment is to find out how the height that a ball is dropped from affects the size of a crater.

Preliminary experiment

We noticed that the imprint on the crater in sand and sugar was ruined as particles of the substance rolled in filling the crater up. We realised by measuring the size of these craters the result would be unjust and not a fair test. ...

The next thing we wanted to decide was the size, type and shape of the ball. ... Our group decided to complete the final experiment with the golf ball which made a small but measurable crater. ...
Golf ball – this is the ball used to be dropped and form the crater. ...
Metre stick – This will be used to measure the height of the clamp where the ball is dropped from

So in this instance we will do this by keeping the size, mass, and shape of the ball the same. ... We have decided that we want the flour to be light, fluffy and not compressed to make a bigger crater, this is due to the fact that when the flour is not compressed, there is more air in the flour and it is less dense so when the ball lands into the substrate it displaces the air and the force against the ball is less, therefore causing a bigger crater.
