The people who work at Starbucks work on one or two specific things (e.g. cash register and pastries) whereas others make the beverages. When you go to Starbucks and ask for a drink it is a very quick and efficient manner to which you are served. At Dunkin Donuts, although sometimes quick, it could take longer because it is the same person that takes your order that will make your coffee, or other beverage, and your bagel or anything else you ask for. It becomes evident then, that although Dunkin Donuts requires more hands-on training, Starbucks is more intent on delivering interpersonal skills, and has a strong emphasis on building a ‘we’ feeling in the workplace – backed with a strong sense of teamwork and efficiency, and job security. When analyzing both franchises to see whether or not they operate in the 4-P cycle of continuous improvement, it seems to be more of the same, with Starbucks emphasizing a stronger desire for improving and cultivating the business. As far as products go, however, it is simply a matter of preference with the consumer. Starbucks is more of an upscale atmosphere serving things such as brownies, cakes, and a variety of coffee-related beverages. Dunkin Donuts is more of donuts and bagels. A wide variety donuts and bagels are always fresh, whereas at Starbucks it seems that their products tend to be a little stale towards the end of the day. Dunkin Donuts is continually baking more and more fresh donuts throughout the day to ensure freshness. Inventory is taken throughout the day to ensure there are not too many donuts out that are older to ensure freshness and delivering the best product they can throughout the day.
