Appreciation
...eft for college and came back a different person. When she left she did not want the quilts. She thought they were old and out of date, and did not appreciate the quilts, the meaning they truly had. Quilts are made from many pieces that each represent a certain story or meaning behind it. They are not just to cover your guest bed, or to hang up on the wall. We sometimes think that the things our parents give us are all junk and no good for the place we call home. Maggie was the younger sister and did very much so like the quilts and did appreciate them for what they are. Maggie is not the average girl, ‘she likes being with her mom and family members, she’s not portrayed as the youth of today. The quilt in the story had much meaning but that was not the reason Dee wanted it. In the story it also talks about Dee and the items see wanted to take. She didn’t want to take the items because of the meaning behind them, but more just for decoration. “This churn top is what I need,” “Didn’t Uncle Buddy whittle it out of a tree you all used to have.”(walker, 179) She in a way she wanted the churn because her Uncle Buddy whittled it but it was really to do something artistic with it. “I can use the churn top as a centerpiece for the alcove table […] I’ll think of something artistic to do with the dasher.” Dee, like us takes many things for granted and doesn’t see the appreciation behind certain items. We belittle people and family members because we think the way Dee thinks not the way our families do. Our families have a meaning towards everything that does not involve money. The items were made with love a compassion that we take for granted, we think nothing of them. The country setting has more meaning and is appreciated by Maggie and her mom than it is by Dee. ”A yard like this is more comfortable than most people know. It is not just a yard. It is an extended living room.(walker, 173) When you go outside and the grass is freshly cut you appreciate nature and the beauty it has to offer. Not growing up with materialistic items Maggie and her mom appreciate the little things such a yard. We sometimes don’t think that our names have any meaning behind them. That they were just a name that came up in our parent’s heads. Parents at times name their kids after their family members, friends or a related event at the time of birth, such as rain, august, and so fo...
