This visit to the synagogue and immersion in Jewish tradition relates very closely to my first year seminar, Cultures, Communities and Connections. The seminar was based on learning about French culture and during the class we traveled to France over fall break. I came to the realization in class before the trip that in order to understand a culture, one must remain open minded. I knew that things were going to seem different and unusual to me, however I understood that for me to fully experience the culture I would not be able to isolate myself from these differences. In the synagogue, I could determine how I felt about Judaism through my reactions to various situations while I was there. Although I felt very comfortable during the service, I could not see myself as a Jew. However, I am now more aware of religious differences and the misunderstandings that can arise from those differences.
