...igence has become popular in schools and at work. People want to know why some succeed while others fail despite natural talent and knowledge. Why the most talented are not always the most successful and wealthiest people. Emotional intelligence is important for many reasons. Not only is it important to help us make good decisions and act effectively, but it is also important in the workplace. For instance, for someone who wants to effectively influence others, it would depend on there ability to connect with them on an emotional level, to understand what they are feeling and why. To effectively influence others we also need to be able to manage our own emotions. It may also be useful in problem solving and achievement, as well as to motivate yourself and others (Schmidt, 2002). Emotional intelligence can be broken down into five main parts: 1.knowing your own emotions, 2.being able to manage your emotions, 3.having the ability to motivate yourself, 4. recognizing emotions in others, and 5. how you handle relationships (Richburg & Fletcher, 2002). Knowing your own emotions is the main part of emotional intelligence, having the ability to know your true feelings gives you the ability to make conscious choices regarding life decisions. Being able to manage your emotions is defined as the ability to increase your level of self awareness. Being able to handle and control the positive and negative experiences that life brings. Having the ability to motivate yourself is when you are able to spend that extra time doing something that you like, that will make you feel good about yourself. Recognizing emotions in others is important because, in order to recognize your own emotions you need to be able to see what others are doing or have done in a similar situation such as how one should act when socializing with others. How you handle a relationship is not as important as the other four, because every relationship is different and changes all the time. Emotional intelligence may be measured as an ability or personal characteristic in yourself. (Schutte & Malouff, 2002).
