Women in Ancient Rome
...I am told how to act or live. I feel that when I hear about instances when women are treated with such control I should feel privileged to have my freedom. In some ways I guess that I could say that I have been controlled by a male authority, that being my father but that was to ensure that I grew up in a respectable manor and was able to have the ability to have freedom for myself. The women in the Roman times were treated with control because it was felt that they were not an important part of society and needed to be under close supervision. I would say that I am a very feministic person and believe very much in women’s rights and that they should be treated fairly like any other male authority would want to be treated. Women should be able to have the freedom to make their own choices and it is clearly understood that in ancient Rome they were not given that choice. Not only were they controlled by the men but they were also controlled to do things that they might not want to do, they were the keeper of the house in terms of its up keep and they had no right to education. It is during these times that I analyze how much life back then would have been so difficult and that the women during these times had the strength to put up with all that they were dealt. In my opinion controlling a person is the worst thing that could possibly happen because it is not doing anything to the authority that is doing the controlling except giving them a sense of pride and power. Another issue that I think is related to this whole thing of males having control over women is that they were afraid that the women would become over powering and start thinking in a more logical way then the men. It was said that at no time in Rome's history were women allowed to hold office. In the early days of the Republic women were not even allowed to make suggestions. By the beginning of the Empire many men were seeking and following the advice of their wives. It was all right to do so, provided the advice was given in private and the husband did not make a big deal of it. To me this is a significant indicator that women were becoming more mindful then the men and it was not going to be accepted into society. For me this is a hard concept to under take because I have so many feelings toward this the topic of women’s rights and how they...
