Michael learned that trait from his father and now takes his broken jaw from McCluskey, and the fact Sollozzo wants to kill his father personally. This is a great trait because it allows for no sympathetic emotions to enter his mind, which may slow his reflexes and get himself killed. While Michael waited for Sollozzo he knew he had to keep his mind on business and welcomed the pain from his jaw because it kept him alert. Michael’s awareness is so keen that he takes note of Sollozzo’s, “firm, warm and dry hand” as he shook it. After arriving at the destination Michael’s attention becomes focused on the only other two people in the restaurant, and wonders if the have been put there by Sollozzo earlier.
