Emily was a tradition because she was an aging burden to the town. So when she died she was like a fallen monument or like a important figure that passed on. “ Miss Emily had been a tradition, a duty, and a care; sort of hereditary obligation upon the town.” Her father made her a permanent debt to the town while she was alive. Question #3- What symbols of the Old South are present in “A Rose for Emily”? What is the effect of these? Answer #3- One of the symbols of the old south in the story “A Rose for Emily” is the black servant. Slavery is definitely a symbol of the old south, more so a distinction of the south. Another symbol is the graves in the story, “Miss Emily had gone to join those august names where lay in the cedar-bemused cemetery among the ranked and anonymous graves of Union and Confederate soldiers”. The confederate soldiers are one of the most remembered symbols of the old south. The symbol reflects a way of life abandoned and forgotten.
