Candy Freak
...ou really get a sincere understanding of what he is trying to say. I believe the purpose of this book is to unveil the hidden secrets of the candy world as well as to acknowledge his one true addiction or “freak” which is candy. Almond’s desire for candy especially for chocolate began when he was a young boy. Almond states “I loved that I would find my dad, on certain Saturday afternoons, during the single hour each week…..making fudge in the scary black cast-iron skillet kept under the stove. I loved the fudge itself – dense, sugary, with a magical capacity to dissolve on the tongue.” (10) As a child Almond’s fondest memories with his father was on these particular Saturday’s. Almond as a child enjoyed the delectable taste of chocolate. Almond also takes time to truly explain his “freak” and his fixation with chocolate. Almond states that there were other factors that played into his obsession. The “oral fixation” affects. Almond in some way was a thumb sucker until the age of 10. The taste of candy was appealing to him. He always had to have a piece of candy or something in his mouth. The “whole name thing” amazed me because it tells how Almond received his candyfreakish name Almond. His great-grandfather had a true academic ambition so he changed his last name to Almond to receive his grade and assignments first. In my personal opinion Almond didn’t choose his “freak”, it was passed down from his great-grandfather to his father unto him. Almond uses so my descriptive language throughout this book. For instance when Almond refers to Caravelle he gives the candy such human qualities. He states that the Caravelle “was full-bodied, dark and lustrous and supple.
