...s fear causes the girls to lie about their actions. At first they lie about the dancing in the woods, but later admit to that, but still refuse to admit to practicing witchcraft. These lies cause one small lie to lead to big lies. This causes the girls to blame Tituba for all witchcraft in the woods. Next is the fear that Tituba has due to all of these girls blaming her for the witchcraft. Tituba is beaten, and since she is a slave she is worth very little to her owner Paris. Tituba fears death because she knows Paris has no problem killing her to save himself. Reverend Hale gives Tituba a way out by just simply admitting that she was possessed by the devil. Tituba knows that if she takes this way out she will not be killed. She then lies about being possessed and is let go. The final factor in the fear theme is the fear the girls have of being witches.
