osmosis

... were in or around the 20 mark. If I were to conduct this experiment again, I would repeat it at least 8 more times to get a greater understanding of the averages. I would only leave the test tubes for 24 hours on a cool day or at least in a cool laboratory. This is so that it would not have the chance to grow mould. To prevent evaporation taking place I would either cork each test tube or wrap cling film around the top. This would result in a fairer test. I would also make sure that the potatoes were all fresh. This is because if some of them had been lying longer than another then they would have dried out more intensely. The way in which I would improve the test in order to show more evidence of Osmosis taking place would be to place the potatoes into different sized test tubes. This is because each potato can only hold so much liquid and I would get a wider range of results due to its flaccidity. Osmosis Conclusion The purpose of the investigation was to record and explain the effect of osmosis on the weight of potato chips when immersed in different concentrations of sugar and water. I predict that the higher the concentration of sugar solution surrounding the potato chips, the greater reduction in the final mass of the potato chip. When a potato chip is surrounded by water, the potato chip has a lower water potential than the water because it has a lower proportion of free water molecules. This means that water particles will flow into the potato chip through the semi permeable membrane, which will increase the weight. The graph shows the averages and the line of best fit for the percentage change in mass of the potato chips over the course of the experiment. The graph is curved and slopes downwards and does not go through the origin. Because the line is not straight and does not pass through the origin,...
