Beloved: Loss and Recovery
...ey did not hold her for long. When she returned home, her community began to hate her for what she had done to the innocent baby. For eighteen years, no one from the community spoke to her. She lost respect and dignity from her community. After the incident, Sethe and her youngest daughter, Denver are faced with the ghost of Beloved. She is the daughter that was murdered by Sethe. Sethe starts to feel guilty about what she had done to Beloved and becomes a slave to her every need. The longer Beloved stays in the house, the more Sethe health decreases. As Beloved demands more from Sethe, Sethe becomes more distracted and looses her job and her friend Paul D. Furthermore, there weren’t any money coming in, so the family had little to eat. Ironically, as Sethe grows thinner and weaker, Beloved grows larger, as if she were literally devouring her mother. Recovery: Denver goes out to find help for Sethe.
