There was also a nicely sung solo by Balthasar, an attendant to Don Pedro. The play takes place in and around the palace of Leonato, the Governor of Messina, Italy. The plot is a made up of a series of schemes and tricks to manipulate several of the characters. Soldiers arrive at Lenato’s palace after fighting in a war: Claudio, a young heroic warrior, Benedick, a lord with great wit, Don Pedoro, the Prince of Aragon, and Don John, Pedro’s illegitimate brother, a bitter and hateful man. The main female characters are Hero, Leonato’s sweet daughter, who fall’s in love with Claudio. Beatrice, Hero’s cousin, a strong willed young lady who eventually falls in love with Benedick. She is also great with speech and wit, and is constantly conversing in with Benedick. Beatrice and Benedick are continually competing to outdo one another with clever insults.
