They do not laugh when people tell a joke or say something funny. The problems of communications directly result in one of the most obvious symptoms of autistics which is lack of social interactions. As a mater of fact, it is much more difficult for them to make social relationships ( National Institute of Mental Health, 1999). They can not understand their own or others’ emotions, so they are segregated from others. Moreover, because they lack understanding and do not have meaningful gestures or languages, it is extremely hard for them to ask for things ( National Institute of Mental Health, 1999). They may just stare at things they want, but no words or gestures are given. They do not know how to express themselves. Besides expression problems, they also do not know how to share interest with others. In one case, one child is extremely interested in sky-train, and no mater what others say, he just talks about sky-train. Everything is about sky-strain. ( Numerow, 2002). In other words, they are living in their own separate world and are extremely lonely. Strange and repetitive behaviors are another typical symptom of autism. Many people with autism have a desperately need for sameness. Thus, they show repetitive behaviors, and a very strong need for routine. For instance, the autistic children may flap their hands, walk on their tiptoes and rock back and forth. Some of the autistic children could just run from room to room turning lights on and off for hours and hours (National Institute of Mental Health, 1999). While other autistics show the need of one or more certain kind of routine. For example, they eat exactly the same food on every Sunday morning or watch the same television program every Friday night.
