He offers many new dimensions to the character; he plays Romeo with the strength few actors can manage to find within themselves. He is definitely an actor to look for in the future. Mercutio’s character provided something no other Romeo and Juliet remake has, comic relief in a tragedy. Harold Perrineau plays a drag queen that seems happy, but is battling inner demons of his own, not a likely candidate for the role in any other version of Romeo and Juliet, but in this one he is absolutely perfect. His riveting portrayal of Mercutio presents new light to the character. Scenes were tweaked to stay true to the modern theme, but these adjustments were done appropriately and with good taste.
