When Neo re-enters the Matrix, he sees the people as bound slaves to the matrix and limited by the conditions set upon by the machines to control them. They do not have the abilities to wake up from this illusion and discover the true meaning of life. During Neo’s return, he feels the pity that Plato suggests an enlighten man would feel upon his return to the darkness of the cave, and thus Neo feels a responsibility to free the mankind from their slavery. He believes that once he saves those people and takes them to see the truth of reality, they will have the will to control their own minds. Further more, they can even rebuild a brand new world which could be better than the imaginary world that machine programmed. On the other hand, the evil human traitor Cypher represents those that do not understand or want to understand the real world and wish to remain in his bound state. They would rather let computers, like Agent Smith, the demons of the cave, chain them and create an imaginary world for them to delude themselves with. Those people are actually sacred of reality and try to avoid the truth because of the unpleasantness of becoming accustomed to a new world. Many people in today’s society are living much like the human batteries, letting evil chain them within the illusion, keeping them in bondage. Problems with drugs and denial can substitute for the matrix, denying the harsher aspects of life that they have to deal with. For those still trapped in the Matrix, many would not wish to leave the comforts of their own imaginary world and face the fact that everything is unreal.
