Jekyll and Hyde

...er […] for there before my eyes […] stood Henry Jekyll. » (Dr. Jekyll Mr. Hyde, p. 68, lines 6 to 18) This is an important passage in the book, where Stevenson explains to us that curiosity is not always good. Dr. Lanyon sees Mr. Hyde transforming himself into Dr. Henry Jekyll. Earlier in the book, we hear Dr. Lanyon telling Mr. Utterson that he and dr. Jekyll were not close to each other as they have been into the past, because of the perception of science of Dr. Jekyll. Dr. Lanyon doesn’t approve that view of science. Both men listed above have «a bond of common interest», which we can deduct, because both men are men of science, is science. («They have only differed on some point of science», p. 19, lines 14-15), which Mr. Hyde also mentions before taking the potion to Dr. Lanyon («you who have denied the virtue of transcendental medicine», p. 68, lines 4-5). Before drinking the potion Mr. Hyde had asked Dr. Lanyon if he wanted to watch him drink the potion or go outside. («Will you be wise? […] and to go forth from your house without further parley? Or has greed of curiosity to much command of you? », p. 67, lines 17-22). There must have been a lot of pressure on Dr. Lanyon because of the police were looking for Mr. Hyde. By looking at Dr. Jekyll’s character we can see that he was a very successful, intelligent, rich, benevolent and religious minded man. After the drug failed him, he was losing hold control of himself. He could neither control the transformations nor Mr. Hyde. . ButThe worst part about it was that he enjoyed being Mr. Hyde. Becauseas he could then, he could do what the dark side of Dr. Jekyll wanted to do. The dark side could rise, not by the name of Dr. Jekyll but by the name of Mr. Hyde. So whatever he did would be Mr. Hyde’s fault and not his. But Howeverthen,, after the death of Sir Danvers Carew, he realized his dark side, or Mr. Hyde, had more control over him than he had over Mr. Hyde. This is the reason why; at the end he kills himself at the end because by then he ,understands it was too late to find a cure. Firstly, because the powder he had used to create the drug was overhad run out and he couldn’t get the same one with the exact dosages, and secondly, because Mr. Hyde would appear each time faster than the previous time. And mMost of all, he didn’t want to suffer any more. He was tired of this life of transformations.: «My provision of the salt, which had never been renewed since the date of the first experiment, began to run low. I sent out for a fresh supply, and mixed the draught; the ebullition followed, and the first change of color, not the second; I drank it. You will learn from Poole how I have had London ransacked; it was in vain; and I am now persuaded that my first supply was impure, and that it was that unknown impurity which lent efficacy to the draught» (Dr. Jekyll Mr. Hyde, p. 87, lines 21 to 30) By reading this extract, we can learn that Dr. Jekyll tried his best to make the drug so that he could remain as Dr. Jekyll for longer periods, because Mr. Hyde was growing stronger and stronger. But something important we have to notice is that he “confessed” his sins to Mr. Utterson, in the last chapter of the book, entitled «Henry Jekyll’s full statement of the case». And now, by looking at Mr. Uttersons character we can see that he is a respectable, friendly and loyal man. Firstly, because when he saw that the weapon which killed Sir Danvers Carew was the walking stick given to Dr. Jekyll by Mr. Utterson., hHe was loyal enough not to tell the police that the walking stick used to kill Sir Danvers Carew belonged to Dr. Henry Jekyll. And sSecondly, because he, even after knowinghaving realized that there was ...
