After Fred departs, two portly gentlemen also dropped by and requested Scrooge for a contribution to their charity. Scrooge reacted in this holiday visitors with bitterness and venom and says that prisons and workhouses are the only charities he is willing to support and the gentlemen left empty-handed. Paragraph 2: Scrooge followed the same old routine of taking his dinner in his usual tavern and returning home to his dark and cold apartment. Later that evening, he receives a chilling visitation from the ghost of his dead partner, Jacob Marley. At first, Scrooge shouted in disbelief, refusing to admit that he sees Marley’s ghost and claimed that it is a strange case of food poisoning. After a while, they then settled down. Marley told Scrooge that he has spent seven years wandering around the earth in his heavy chains as punishment from his sins. Looking haggard and pallid, Marley relates his unfortunate story and wanted to save scrooge from receiving the same fate. He also said that Scrooge will be visited by three spirits over the next three nights. Marley’s ghost then disappeared into the mist while Scrooge collapses into a deep sleep. Paragraph 3: Scrooge awakes at midnight, which was a moment before the arrival of the Ghost of Christmas Past. Initially, he thinks he has slept through an entire day or that it’s actually noon and the sun has merely gone under some sort of cover. He suddenly remembers the words of Marley’s ghost “The first of the three spirits will arrive at one o’clock”. Even though he is frightened, Scrooge decided to wait for his supernatural visitor. At one o’clock, the curtains of Scrooge’s bed are blown aside by a strange, childlike phantom with a brightly glowing head. The spirit slowly informs Scrooge that he is the Ghost of Christmas Past which represents a memory as the aged appearance of the childlike figure touches on the memories as a force that connects the different stages of a person’s life.
