William Shakespeare's Hamlet is a drama that is well known for its content and depiction of characters. Over the years, it has gone through many variations of interpretations. A very successful version is Kenneth Branagh’s film Hamlet created in 1996. The film’s success can be attributed to a number of factors. His effective direction allowed for the amazing play to be transformed into a brilliant film. The way Branagh presents the plot, the themes within the play as well as the characters makes his film so impressive.Many have stated that with Shakespeare's plays, especially the lengthy Hamlet, a way to measure an adaptation is by examining what the director took out and what was left in. Branagh's Hamlet is so unique because he took very little out of the play; he attempted to make a film of the entire play. From beginning to end the plot of the film was just the same as the play, with a few minor changes. In Shakespeare’s Hamlet it is clearly illustrated that Hamlet is extremely upset over his father’s death and the fact that his mother married his uncle so soon after. However, although the reader can easily understand this, the film makes this fact much more interesting because the audience is able to view how a character is feeling by their expressions and actions rather than having to comprehend it by their words. This is particularly displayed near the beginning of the movie when we see Hamlet dressed completely in black, standing ramrod straight, silhouetted in the distance behind the bleachers full of cheering courtiers.
