AO1- What is involved in a Pilgrimage? Illustrate the differing approaches to pilgrimage by referring to two or more places of pilgrimage. A pilgrimage is a religious journey, which ends up at a Holy Place. This might be where a saint or vision was seen or where Jesus performed a miracle. You can go on a pilgrimage on your own or with a large group. People go on pilgrimages to feel the holiness of the place, to be closer to God, to seek forgiveness, devotion to God and to ask for or to receive God’s help. Two places of pilgrimage are Lourdes and Rome. Lourdes has become a place of pilgrimage because it is where St Bernadette saw 18 visions of the Virgin Mary in 1858.
