The early chesapeake settlers upon settling migrated to the Americas in search of wealth. The chesapeake settlers had unrealistic expectations of the area. Most of the settlers were looking for an outlet to get rich quick, but they were not used to doing the hard work required to start a settlement. Such as aristocratic settlers who were not used to manual labor with farming and surviving on their own. These settlers believed in the myth of 'cities of gold' and that they could get as much gold as possible and sell it back home. However these settlers were not prepared for the harsh reality of Jamestown, which almost brought the end to it. Where as the New England settlers were Puritains in search of a place to live where they could worship how they wanted to and did not want to live with people who had different religious beliefs. The Puritains wanted to reform the Protestant church and begin new lives.
