Love, In midst of Suffering
...ey Marx, will help me further explain the Viktor Frankl quote. In the quotation, two high school football coaches are having different opinions on how to turn their players into men. According to Terry Changuris, one has to be physically and mentally challenging on the players to turn them into men. He believes that by pushing the players to their physical and emotional limits by choosing to stand up against the challenge will determine if they are men. This is not the case, according to Biff. He believes that we can do anything, if we love each other as much as we love ourselves. He believes that they would be able to beat any opposing football team, only if they love each other as a team. He disproves Terry’s belief and deems that becoming a man has nothing to do with being big and strong. This quotation and the quote by Frankl parallel each other in meaning – that in order to achieve success, we need love. Both quotations express that love is the ultimate goal in life and that life will be incomplete without love. In other words, life will be meaningless if we do not share love or are not loved. Love makes a team more unified and stronger. Love gives the bond that the team needs in order to be united. Love also destroys the barriers that creates friction between the players. If there were no love, the players would be discouraging each other. There would have been a lot of disagreements between players which will lower the team’s morale and would affect the team’s overall performance. For us to understand the true meaning of love, we sometimes need to feel some misery or hardship. This idea brings truth to the saying; “You will not appreciate it until you lose it.” We do not easily grasp the importance and significance of something until we lost it. In the case of Viktor Frankl, he never learned the true magnitude of freedom, until he lost it in the concentration camp; he never appreciated the importance of life, until he almost lost it. In terms of its theme, the Bible passage about Jesus calming the storm is also in close relationship with the Viktor Frankl quote. In the story, which is found in Matthew 14:22-33, the disciples are having troubles while fishing out to sea, because of the violent storm that is going to sink their boat. Jesus walked on the water, and he asked Peter to come to him. Being aghast by this unbelievable circumstance, Peter stepped out of the boat to the water where he started sinking. Jesus reached out his hand to help him, saying that he has little faith. As Jesus stepped into the boat, the storm died, the winds ceased, and the sea became calm. This story is in close relationship with the Frankl quote because it deals with suffering and being saved from it because of love. Peter is in similarity with Frankl because they were both in distress and confined in a dangerous place. Jesus, in the Bible passage, represents the salvation that we would receive if we have love and faith. Because Jesus loved his disciples, he performed a miracle – walking on water – in order to save them. The highest love of all is the love Jesus Christ has for all of us. The thought that God would become a man, die for us and still have the love to give us forgiveness for our sins is truly beyond our comprehension. This unconditional love is truly immeasurable. In my own life, a death of a close family member is always a tragedy and devastation for me. It is melancholic to think that I will never see a person who has a great influence in my life. I would always feel alone and sometimes in guilt that I sometimes took them for granted and I never appreciated the times they were with me. I was 13 and I visited my grandparents for vacation. By the end of my vacation, my grandpa and I had a . My grandpa was sick for a long time and his death has always been...
