Although Joe acts this way towards Pip, Pip proves to the reader that he is not worthy of Joe’s friendship by continuously lying to Joe throughout his life. Pip takes Joe for granted throughout his whole life until Pip’s great expectations are revealed. Pip then realizes that the benefits of his great expectations were not as he expected and he wishes to have Joe as his companion once again. Due to Pip’s dishonesty, his ashamed sentiments towards Joe, and his lack of gratitude towards Joe, Pip is not worthy of Joe’s friendship.
