They might have slaves that would work for them and he would not have to worry about how they were treated or even paying them. They just did what he said. Since the slaves were doing all of this work, it also gave the masters more free time to do other things like socialize. Now, The United States has its own “brand” of slavery. It is called technology. We would be lost nowadays without many of our modern amenities. In the past, we did not have computers, cell phones, PDA’s, navigation systems, or the Internet. Before these things, we had to actually go to libraries, not just go to www.google.com and do a search and get more material than we could ever know what to do with. I cannot even remember what life was like before cell phones. I’m not sure how we kept up with each other. Also, if we were on a vacation, we actually had to open up this big book called an atlas and read a map. Now in a lot of cars you can use your OnStar® or your built-in navigation system to give you step-by-step directions to your destination. We, as Americans, are very similar to the Roman citizens. We have so many different things, some listed earlier, that make our lives so much easier. The Romans “amenities” were their slaves. They did all the work that the Roman citizens did not want to do. The slaves ran errands for their masters. We do not even have to get up from our computers to pay bills, buy clothes, send mail, buy stocks, buy airplane tickets or buy food. The Romans would give the unskilled jobs to the slaves so they would not have to do them. We, as Americans, have partially eliminated the bank teller with the ATM as one example.
