Where would we be without glasses, birth control, microwaves, or many medications? We couldn’t live without them. So for the argument of “homosexuality is not natural” to be valid we must first rid the world of all things “ un-natural” Let me ask you a question, Could you live without your microwave? So many people use their microwave so much that they have no need for an oven. What about medication? Do you take any? Would you be able to function without them? My point is that we depend on these things, and, if we were to rid the world of everything that wasn’t “natural”, we wouldn’t be able to survive. The Gator GSA argues that, “Heterosexual marriages are valid because the produce children, Infertile couples and old people cannot legally be married because the world needs more children”. I disagree with this, heterosexual marriages are not valid because they produce children they are valid because it’s two people who love each other and want to be together forever. There are so many married couples who cannot or choose not to have children, if marriage were solely for the purpose of reproducing then it would not be legal for them to be married, but, it is legal for them to get married; therefore marriage is not solely for the purpose of reproduction. Many children do not have any parents at all, so if gay marriages were legal, gay couples would be able to adopt children and give them a better life. They also state that,” Obviously gay parents will raise gay children, because straight parents only raise straight children.” I disagree with this because most gay people have straight parents. Therefore, if it works the same way then most gay parents children will have straight kids. Right? Many recent scientific findings actually support the idea that homosexuality is genetically predetermined. In a study conducted by D.F. Swaab, it was found that the SCN in the hypothalamus of heterosexual males was twice as large as that of homosexual males. The hypothalamus indirectly governs a persons’ sex drive. Which points towards the idea that homosexuality is indeed genetic, and has nothing to do with the way your parents raise you or the type of lifestyle they choose to live. In the article another statement says that,” Gay marriage should be decided by people not the courts. Because the majority-elected legislators, not courts, have historically protected the rights of minorities.” I disagree; in the past majority-elected legislators have not acted in the best interest of minorities. For example, when President Johnson returned to the states’ management of their affairs, legislators in the south passed what was called the Black Codes. The Black Codes reduced free blacks to a kind of legal servitude, which was a step backwards instead of forwards. Therefore, if we turn gay rights over to majority-elected legislators who’s to say they won’t take a step back for gay-rights and adapt laws similar to Holland, which has no gay rights. Once again, they argue that, “Gay marriage will change the foundation of society. Heterosexual marriage has been around for a long time and we could never adapt to a new social norm because we haven’t adapted to cars or longer life spans.” I disagree, people have adapted to longer life spans.
