...nd improving the organization. Leadership exists in many parts of a society. Not only does it exist in the military, but also the private sector. For example, the U.S. military uses the chain of command to insure objectives are completed and missions are successful. On the other hand, leadership also exists in companies, schools and stores, where the CEO, principal or store manager/owner acts as the head and leads others under them. Leadership is essential for any society to be successful and productive. Benjamin Disraeli once said, “I must follow the people. Am I not their leader?” Personally, I believe leadership is being a knowledgeable person who demonstrates values of character and guides or directs others. However, I also believe that one must first learn to follow to be a good leader because only then will he or she be able to lead others in a more successful way. The values of character that I believe a leader portrays are loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and courage. Of these seven values, I think honor is the most important because it holds the other values together and without it, the other values are useless. Due to the fact that with leadership comes great power, and with great power comes great responsibility, it is not surprising that leadership has in some cases led to dictatorship.
