Dorisca is killed because he wanted all the land for himself. He also insulted Sauveur and Bienaimé’s mother which propelled Sauveurs’ anger and made him “draw his machete more quickly than the other and stretches him out stone dead” (63). The fact that they were not satisfied with what they had made them greedy, which inevitably caused the entire fiasco. As compared to the death of Manuel, it is about the very same thing. Gervillen wants Annaise to be his wife and she doesn’t want to. She is in love with Manuel, whom she met when he returned from Cuba. She chooses Manuel over Gervillen, who swears that she would regret choosing Manuel over him. It is bad enough that Sauveur had killed his father and now that the woman he loves is being taken away by his Sauveurs’ nephew, just drives him wild. He vows to get revenge because of what Annaise said to him saying “I’m a man of my word. Mark well what I say—that Negro will regret ever having crossed the path of Gervillen Gervillis. Damn His soul!” (97). He kept His word as Manuel dies later on in the story.
