When she arrived at school every day, she would get inspected by the “fashion police.” All the “really cool” girls were wearing lip gloss and eye shadow at her age and she wasn’t. She also explained to her mother that one of the children that are in her class “wears those funny plastic see-through sandals” and she also wears “these little outfits where everything matches.” One day Ruby and her mother were on their way home from school and Ruby, in embarrassment, asks her mother, “Mama, can I get some deodorant?” Her mother of course asked her why, and she had told her that the other kids use deodorant, and they say she stinks. Her mother knew at that age she hadn’t been through any hormonal shifts and didn’t need deodorant. Another thing that plays a big part in the way children and teens dress is the media. There is always a certain pop star that a child wants to be like. Brittney Spears, Jessica Simpson, and Christina Aguilera are a few of the role model pop stars. The children want to look like the stars and do what they do. They don’t realize that the stars are a lot older than they and they are grown up. These children are between the ages of seven and seventeen and should not be wearing and doing some of the stuff that they do. The children also see things on TV, and they want whatever it is because “everyone” else has it. When children are at that young age they have more important things to worry about than what they look like and who they have to try and impress. They need to worry about school and getting good grades first. Peer pressure also plays a big part in children’s lives now days. The more peers say to other peers, the more it will affect them.
