...e in this important era of art history also contributed towards my decision to base this paper upon him. Emmanuel Radnitzky was born in Philadelphia during the year 1890. He was nicknamed Man Ray at age 15. He later moved with his family to New York City where he went to the Academy of Fine Arts and the Ferrer School. He started off wanting to become a painter but soon began studying architectural drawing and engineering. His got his start as a graphic designer and typographer. In 1910 he met Alfred Stieglitz, a very important photographer at the time, and was instantly influenced by his work. Shortly thereafter he had his own show and met Marcel Duchamp. With Duchamp’s encouragement he became a member of New York's proto-Dada group along with Duchamp, Francis Picabia, and others. “After a few unsuccessful experiments, and notably after the publication of a unique issue of New York Dada in 1920, Man Ray stated that “Dada cannot live in New York,” and in 1921 followed Duchamp to live in Paris. Soon after his arrival in Paris, Man Ray made his first Rayograph. He participated in the first international Dada show held in Paris, and also had work in the first Surrealist show.
