Election Day Blues
...However, I would much rather watch “The Real World” or play basketball than watch C-SPAN or the presidential debates. Don’t get me wrong, I actually am really interested in the way that our government operates. In fact, my political science class is by far my favorite. I guess I just struggle to keep my interested peaked at a one day event whose buildup basically encompasses four years. One of the biggest reasons I haven’t become super involved or opinionated about the election is that I really can’t tell the difference between Bush and Kerry. I do know the candidates basic stances on the uber controversial subjects – the war in Iraq, abortion, gay marriages, health care – but beneath those I really don’t know what they are standing for. It’s hard to passionate or excited about something when you don’t really know what is going on. I do recognize that the reason I don’t know which each candidate stands for is completely my fault. I know there are tons of resources out there that could be utilized to help me better understand what each contender is hoping to accomplish. I could have used easily accessible websites, to numerous television and radio programs, to people who enjoy talking politics to help form opinions on Bush, Kerry, and Nader. However, this would require me to do some research and take time away from doing something I’d actually ENJOY doing. So basically, I work with what I acquire through word of mouth in places such as this composition class or other semi-informed friends. That is probably the biggest reason I will not be voting in the 2004 election. I don’t feel as if I’m educated enough about candidate to make the best decision possible. If I did vote, it would mostly be based on which person I liked better. I strongly feel that you should vote for a person who you share the same principles with concerning policies, programs, and other ideas. I don’t feel knowledgeable enough to cast a vote that I feel will benefit me the greatest. Another big factor for my unpatriotic feelings is the thought that my vote really doesn’t make a difference. Yes, I know one vote does play a large role, and that was clearly demonstrated last year down in Florida. But honestly, wouldn’t the election...
