I speak to people everyday of my life, and before I say anything I have to think before I say it. On the times that I don’t think before I speak, I have realized from my own experiences that it can end in a way I never intended. On numerous occasions I have said things to people, and afterwards the person has said to me, “You need to think before you speak”. It is then that I actually realize that I have said something insulting, stupid, or wrong. The job of being a mother is something that should never be taken lightly. Especially if the children are as young as Agatha, Thomas, and Daphne were. Lucy was clearly not a normal caring mother that was around her kids all the time. The lesson that Anne Tyler wanted us to learn from this was that women who have children must be willing to take full responsibility. Lucy went out a lot and expected other relatives to take care of her children. She was extremely irresponsible, as she even contemplated leaving her children alone. An example of this is when Ian took care of the children as Lucy went out with Dot. Lucy said she would be back in time for Ian to go to Cicely’s place for dinner. Consequently, she did not return on time and Ian was stuck taking care of the kids. This is an example of her irresponsibility and her inability to be a true mother. This led to Ian bringing up the children through their teenage years. This lesson is true in our everyday lives. A large percentage of divorces are due to mothers not taking care of their children the way they should be. Personally, my mother has always been there for me and my two brothers. She has always been beside us through our lives, and this is why our family bond is so strong to this day. I have learned many family values and morals from what my mother has taught me. Every person makes predictions. However, they vary in their magnitude and importance. The lesson that Anne Tyler wanted us to learn from this was that people shouldn’t make dramatic predictions unless they know the truth. I believe this is the major point that Anne Tyler was trying to make us remember. In the novel Ian made an extremely large prediction.
