Most men wore some form of a moustache, sideburns or a beard. Queen Victoria encouraged a modest appearance in the upper class, but in 1861 when she withdrew from society due to widowhood, Eugenie de Montijo, who was the wife of Emperor Napoleon III took over the influence of fashion in Europe as a whole, and fashion once again took a turn more to the side of being frivolous.
