Finding Forrester

...the greatest books Jamal has ever read. Throughout the movie both Jamal and Forrester, teach each other in a few different ways. The way they helped each other was remarkable. I do not think they even knew that they were helping each other at times until the very end of the movie. Forrester is a very introverted person and I am very curious to know what his background was like. I believe that in the end he really comes out and lets Jamal know that he really did help him conquer his many fears. The first of several ways that student helps the teacher is on Forrester’s birthday when Jamal convinces him to leave his apartment and go to the basketball game. Although it did backfire in a way when they get separated and Forrester nearly has a breakdown, I feel this was the first step for Forrester to overcome his fears of leaving his home. The second step to Forrester overcoming his fears is during an argument with Jamal. The argument started because Jamal hands in a paper he wrote in Forrester’s apartment and is accused of plagiarism by his teacher. When Jamal asks Forrester to tell the school that he had his permission to use part of the article, William refuses to help because Jamal broke one of the rules. The rule was that anything Jamal writes in Forresters apartment stays in the apartment. When he refuses to help, Jamal says to Forrester that he hides behind everything and that he cannot do anything for other people but he expects other people to do things for him. This is when Forrester realizes that he is being selfish and everything Jamal said was correct. In the letter that Forrester wrote to Jamal before he died, he states that he knew what Jamal’s dreams were all along but never expected to realize his own and if it had not been for Jamal he would have never realized what his true dreams were. Forrester did not only learn from Jamal, he also helped teach Jamal a lot about himself. The most obvious and significant way he helped Jamal was to realize his full potential and how to become an even greater writer.
