...I now see this film on more levels than just as a great childhood memory. One thing I tried to pay more attention to was the film’s metaphors for society and the economy. It is said, but some, that this film is basically a commentary on the Populist movement. I only picked up on a few things that supported this idea. One was the scene where Miss Gulch comes to take Toto away from Dorothy, saying that she had an order from the sheriff. Aunt Em says to her something like, “just because you own half the city, doesn’t mean you can take the dog”, showing how the elite or those with money are the ones in control in the city, especially over the poor farming people. Another part of the film which I thought was a small social commentary on the class system of Kansas during that time was when the twister began and the “wizard” said some line about the storm starting, then says, “speaking in the vernacular of the peasantry”. I couldn’t find much else to support this idea. Overall I think this movie is a classic, like I said before.
