The second reason is that many religions, in one form or other, talk about refraining from sex as a means of bettering one-self (incidentally so does Freud). The idea main idea here is that sexual energy is very powerful and should be channeled, to some extent, rather than “wasted” on gaining pleasure from the act of sex itself. Not only can one channel this sexual energy as a means of attaining enlightenment, as done in Tantric Buddhism, but in abstaining from sex, one can use this reserved energy to help accomplish pretty much anything else that they want to. One could certainly argue that Buddha’s ability to accomplish all that he did was in part a result, in part, of his refraining from sexual intercourse. This text also displays another important idea of Buddhism, which is Buddha’s commitment to conduct himself in the correct manor; number Four of The Eight Fold Path, which are further explained under the Five Precepts. It starts out saying that he renounces killing any living being. This is because of his deep compassion for living things. He practiced this to the extent that he only ate one meal per day. He doesn’t waste energy by taking what is not given (stealing); rather he waits for things to come to him or to be offered to him. He doesn’t waste energy on thinking up lies, but speaks only the truth. You could almost picture him as a conduit for the truth, where it simply passes through him.
