The appearance of grunge as a genre and its great accepance by the mainstream can be considered as a reaction against the popular dominance of hair metal. Hair metal bands, such as Poison and Guns 'n Roses had been dominating the charts, especially in the US, for several years in spite of receiving criticism. Grunge music can be sharply constrasted to hair metal's macho lyrics, anthemic riffs, expensive designer clothing and a lack of social consciousness, especially in the race to attract mainstream audiences. Grunge was especially embraced by the youth for its simple defiance of the then- cultural norm, which was seen by many as a corporate-dominated and superficial popular culture. The style of the grunge movement was ordinary and simple. The typical clothing was t-shirts, flannel, jeans, and boots. According to the grunge philosophy, appearance does not matter, it is what is inside that counts. As many lifestyles the grunge scene can be associated with drugs. It was essentially linked to cocaine and many grunge people have converted back to the almost hippie lifestyle of marijuana and LSD. They changed the perception of music and play an important part in music history. Furthermore, Nirvana is generally credited for breaking the genre into the popular consciousness in 1991. The success of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (off Nevermind) surprised the contemporary music industry and made the fans go wild. It was the first grunge clip being played on MTV's alternative shows. The album was a number one hit around the world, and paved the way for more bands as Pearl Jam. For many audiences then and later, grunge came to be almost totally associated with these two bands and their punky, rebellious attitude towards mainstream majorities as well as cultural and social institutions. But the popularity of grunge music began to decline after Kurt Cobain of Nirvana, idolized by millions of fans around the world and considered by most as the spokesman of his generation, committed suicide in April 1994.
