How do the authors of 'The Red Room', 'The Clubfooted Grocer' and 'The Signalman' create suspense and mystery?

...During this story, this line is repeated 4 times over the conversation, to give signs of discouragement. Another example of discouragement is where one of the custodians says; "And are you really going?" This makes it sound more scary and makes the reader think that there really is something scary involved, which makes the story so exciting. Also, one of the custodians says; "This night of all nights" This also creates alot of suspension, as the reader will think that it is halloween or some sort of anniversary, which makes the idea of something scary more coincidential. This is a good way of emphasising the whole concept of hauting and ghosts or terror perhaps. The use of the first person account makes the story more tense, as there is more description, such as smells and only senses that that person can feel, and the primary source is a good way to make the story seem like a true story. This basically means that it makes us more immediate on involving, it makes us feel like we are actually there with him/her. In the part where the protagonist goes into the Red Room, the pace greatly picks up. At the start, there is a calm, slow pace, with the character talking to himself, but once he is in the room, and the first candle is blown out, the pace gets much quicker making it more exciting. this is achieved by stringing lots of sentences into onbe using mostly commas. The idea of something spirituallydoucing the flame on the candles, symbolises cold and dark, which isn't particularly what one would seek if they were to be on their own.
